A practice built around senior judgement.

Opgard & Partners is led personally by its founder. The work, the counterparties, and the courts are met by the same hand that opened the instruction.

Edward Mercer

Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales

Edward founded Opgard & Partners in 2014 after more than two decades in private practice and senior in-house roles. He is recognised for his work on complex commercial disputes, regulatory matters, and the legal affairs of internationally mobile families.

He read law at the University of Oxford and was admitted as a solicitor in 1997. Before founding the firm he led the litigation department of a London-headquartered international practice, and served as General Counsel to a privately held European investment group.

Edward writes and lectures occasionally on the conduct of high-value disputes and the responsibilities of advisers to long-tenured clients. He sits as an arbitrator in commercial matters and is a member of the Law Society of England and Wales.

Our Approach

Four principles, observed strictly.

01

Senior attention

Every instruction is led personally by a partner from first meeting to conclusion. We do not delegate principal judgement.

02

Limited caseload

We accept a small number of matters each year so that each client receives the time the work demands.

03

Absolute discretion

Our clients' affairs are addressed without publicity. We do not name clients or matters except where directed to do so.

04

Transparent terms

Engagements are clearly scoped and priced. We agree the basis of charging in writing before substantive work begins.
